Samsung reveal Omnia M Window Phone 7.5 Mango handset

samsung-omnia-m-windows-phone.jpgShowing they’re not just all about high0end Android phones, Samsung have today lifted the lid on their latest Windows Phone 7.5 Mango handset, the Omnia M.

Featuring a 4 inch Super AMOLED screen powered by a 1GHz processor, the 10.5 mm thick handset has a 5MP camera with auto-focus and flash on the back, with a front-facing VGA camera for video calling, as well as Wi-Fi and HSDPA connectivity. Just 4GB of storage space is onboard (with no sign of microSD expansion) and when paired with just 384MB RAM it’s not looking an incredibly exciting handset in terms of hardware.

But it’s the software side of things Samsung are hoping will catch the casual smartphone fans eye. As well as standard Windows Phone features like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Windows Live feed aggregation through the Windows Phone’s People Hub and 25GB of cloud based SkyDrive storage, there are a handful of bespoke Samsung apps inside too.

The Samsung ChatON app lets users send instant messages freely to Windows, Android, iOS or BlackBerry users, and has the capacity for group chat too. Samsung AllShare lets users stream films, music and gaming apps to compatible TVs, while Family Story allows for the quick sharing of media files across multiple Samsung devices.

No firm pricing or release date info yet, but European smartphone buyers are confirmed to be the first to get a chance of grabbing the handset.

What it takes to make a Leica M9-P Hermes Edition camera

Posted by Will | Posted in News | Posted on 11-05-2012

0

Yesterday was a big day for luxury camera manufacturer Leica. The company announced some new gear and a few tweaks to their existing lineup. As far as the new cameras go, there was the X2, a follow-up to the fixed lens X1, and the V-Lux 40, a rebadged Panasonic point-and-shoot. New accessories included an adapter that makes Hasselblad (H-mount) lenses compatible with Leica’s S series of cameras, and also a Summicron 50mm f/2.0 lens. If you think a $2000 adapter or $7200 lens is expensive, well then sit down before you read this: Leica’s tweaks on their existing M9-P body were a $25,000 Hermes Edition and then a $50,000 variant called the Edition Hermès Série Limiteé Jean-Louis Dumas.

Leica’s mainstay digital rangefinder these days is the M9. If you are a discerning buyer who wants an upgraded display and no branding you can get the more recently released M9-P. The Hermes editions take the M9-P, which, at $8000, is $1000 more then the M9, to a whole different level of cost/value/luxury (call it what you will).

Before you judge though, take a look at the video above. Maybe you don’t think a camera — any camera — is worth $25,000, but it’s undeniable that a significant amount of care goes into these things. While some of use will have trouble appreciating the M9-P as a piece of technology, you can’t help but appreciate it as a piece of craftsmanship. The amount of highly skilled handiwork that goes into this camera — let alone the Hermes editions — is is truly impressive. And then once you get to the Hermes Editions, it’s even more incredible, although my guess is that the markup on all that skilled labor is even still more staggering.

The model featured in the video is the $50,000 Edition Hermès Série Limiteé Jean-Louis Dumas, which will be limited to just 100 units. For the hefty price, you get all the kit below, which includes 200 Dumas photographs, a custom bag, and three lenses, namely the Summicron-M 28 mm f/2.0, Noctilux-M 50mm f/0.95, and a Leica Summicron-M 90mm f/2.0. That Noctilux alone is a $11,000 lens, and it’s backorder just about everywhere, so you can barely even buy one if you hand the cash burning a whole in your handmade, Vicuña wool pants. That doesn’t make the kit a great deal, but it will soften the blow come bonus season.

For more see how the Leica M9 is made, or my hands-on with the M9.

Foxconn preparing to start Apple iTV production?

AppleTV_Mockup.jpgTerry Gou, head of the Foxconn factory where the majority of Apple’s consumer tech products are manufactured, has apparently confirmed the existence of the Apple iTV HDTV. Not only that, but he’s claimed his factory are preparing to put the screens together.

According to China Daily, Gou stated that his company was “making preparations for iTV”, and that the partnership with Sharp for a new Japanese factory in Japan was in order to get his resources up to scratch in time for the start of the production process. Sharp’s IGZO panels, which allow for excellent brightness and power efficiency levels, are expected to feature.

Recently, Cult of Mac sources claimed to have seen a prototype Apple iTV, complete with Siri voice control, FaceTime video chat and gesture based navigation features.

An optimistic Q4 release window is now being suggested.

New iPad App 123D Catch Turns Pictures Into Printable 3-D Renders

Posted by Will | Posted in News | Posted on 11-05-2012

Autodesk, one of the premier 3-D printing companies out there right now–they make AutoCAD, the pioneering software–has a new app out for iPad that aims to make 3-D printing easier. Just snap a bunch of pictures of the object you want to reproduce from different angles, and the app, cleverly named 123D Catch, creates a 3-D rendering automatically.

We’re pretty excited about this concept–3-D printing is one of those nascent technologies that’s getting better and cheaper all the time, and everybody assumes that some form of the tech will be a major part of our lives in the future, but nobody’s quite figured out that killer app that’ll make everyone want to go out and buy one. This isn’t that, but it is a big step towards making 3-D printing easier and more approachable, even if it requires that you take pictures with your iPad, a silly-looking task we have specifically cautioned against in the past. But it looks super easy, and takes away the struggle of having to figure out rendering software, which can be pretty tricky. Check out the video below:

123D Catch is available now at the App Store. It’s free, too.

leica-x2.jpgFans of stylish, retro-tinged compact cameras take note! Lecia have revealed a new premium compact, the Lecia X2, heading your way soon!

Designed to look like part of the M system cameras and fitted with an APS-C sensor, the X2 will snap 16.5 megapixel images with a fixed-length Leica Elmarit 24mm f/2.8 ASPH lens (36mm in the 35mm film format), also boasting full manual controls.

An improved auto-focusing system should deliver faster, quieter and more accurate auto focussing, with the sensor itself benefiting from improved low image noise, high dynamic range and colour accuracy.

On the back sits a 2.7 inch LCD screen, while accessories including a 90-degree swivelling viewfinder and optical viewfinder will also be available. To cap things off, each Lecia X2 will come with a copy of Photoshop Lightroom for post-processing of your shots too.

Expect to pay around £1,575 ($2540) for the Lecia X2, with a vague “coming soon” the closest we have to a release date at present.
