samsung-galaxy-s3.jpgToday Shiny Shiny and Tech Digest went along to Earl’s Court in London for the highly anticipated launch of Samsung’s new handset, the Galaxy S3. After a few loud and dramatic videos and a real life orchestra (fancy, huh?) the Samsung team took to the stage to introduce us to the slick new handset.

Throughout the launch Samsung was really keen to play up just how much the Galaxy S3 is based on nature (JK Shin even went as far as to say it’s “inspired by water, wind, leaves and pebbles”) and designed to work “seamlessly” with our day to day lives and from what we’ve seen so far these aren’t just fluffy buzzwords…

Let’s start by talking about the handset’s impressive screen, the Samsung Galaxy S3 boasts a 4.8″ HD super AMOLED 1280×720 display with a super slim bezel, which means the unit itself isn’t much bigger than its predecessor, despite the huge screen. It has 8.6 mm thickness and weighs only 133g with a smooth, sleek shape, which the team were keen to stress is based on “a minimal, organic design.”

The handset boasts a 8 Megapixel Auto Focus Camera with a range of in-built features like burst shot, buddy photo share and best photo, which is our favourite, as it automatically selects the best photo out of a series of eight. The camera itself has zero shutter lag, which means it takes the photo as soon as you press the button and then spends less than one second getting you back into camera mode. The rear facing camera can also capture full HD 1080 videos and there’s a front facing 1.9 Megapixel camera too.

Samsung has packed a whole load of cool new features into its new handset, including a Siri-like S Voice recognition feature, which understands eight different languages and can search for information, show you the weather forecast, organise your schedules and much more. There’s also Social Tag, which keeps track of the people close to you and recognises the faces of your friends in your photos, this means when you take a photo it’ll recognise who it is, so you can hit a Facebook button and it’ll take you straight to their wall to upload. Voila!

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is running on Android Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0 and 16 or 32GB of memory, with a 64GB option available soon, as well as expandable memory, which sets it apart from the iPhone. The handset also boasts a 2,100 mAh battery, which is pretty impressive too.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 will be launching in 145 countries with 296 mobile operators and the 3G handset will be launched on the 29th of May in Europe, the 30th of May in the UK, and the 4G will hit North America, Japan and Korea in June.

You can get the handset in a choice of two colours, blue and white.

We’ll have extended coverage, thoughts after a hands-on with the new device and plenty of photos later on tonight…

Logitech’s solar-powered Folio keyboard for iPad doubles as a case

Back in 2010 Logitech surprised us by launching a wireless keyboard that required no batteries. Ever. Instead, Logitech had managed to integrate enough solar cells to render a more traditional power source unnecessary. And after owning such a keyboard for over a year now, I can attest it really does work and always has enough juice to transmit my input.

Last year the Mac version of that keyboard launched, but for 2012 Logitech is targeting other devices with its solar tech. That same idea has now been put to a new use in the popular field of tablet accessories. Logitech today announced a solar-powered keyboard specifically for use with the iPad.

Called the Solar Keyboard Folio, the keyboard links to your iPad via a Bluetooth connection, but also offers both front and back protection for your tablet. It can be positioned in two different stand angles, which actually alter the functionality of the keyboard. In position one it acts just like a standard keyboard. In position two, everything is hidden except the first row of keys which become media playback controls for when your iPad is being used to watch a movie or listen to some music.

The Folio will charge in both indoor and outdoor lighting environments, and also features and auto on/off toggle when you open or close the case. It costs $129.99, which seems like a lot for adding just a keyboard. However, when you consider it also replaces the cost of buying a case and will never require you to buy batteries, it suddenly looks a lot more reasonable.

The Solar Keyboard Folio is available to pre-order now on Logitech’s website, but should appear soon at other retailers, possibly with a slightly lower price tag.

Nokia’s 808 PureView megapixel-monster phone to launch this month

Nokia-808-PureView-top.jpgNokia’s 808 Pureview handset, the 41MP cameraphone monster first revealed at Mobile World Congress 2012 back in February, will launch this month, the Finnish mobile giant has confirmed.

The culmination of five years of research into ultra high definition sensors from Nokia’s imaging teams, Russian and Indian consumers will be able to get their hands on the phone before anyone else, with more international territories expected to follow shortly afterwards.

Though massive images can be taken with the handset, Nokia expect people instead to crop 5MP or 8MP images from the larger images, effectively getting the same detail as you would from a high-spec optical zoom-packing camera as a result.

If the phone has one glaring failing, it’s Nokia’s choice to opt for the Symbian OS rather than to build a Windows Phone handset. However, Nokia have expressed interest in bringing the PureView technology to their Windows Phone range in the future, and with Nokia having extended their partnership with imaging experts Carl Zeiss, we’d expect to see some Windows Phone high-spec camera fruits in the near future.

Pixel Qi display kit puts a DIY netbook within reach

Posted by Will | Posted in News | Posted on 02-05-2012

Been waiting to get started on that DIY netbook or tablet until you could easily integrate one of Pixel Qi’s daylight-readable displays? Now’s your chance! Tin Can Tools is offering up a slick new kit that includes everything you need.

That even includes a 10.1-inch Pixel Qi display — no small bonus, because it’s still not easy for the average Joe to get his hands on one. The kit also includes an Animal LVDS expansion board, an LVDS adapter board, and two 40-pin ribbon cables. It’s compatible with the very popular BeagleBoard Rev-C and xM, and both the PandaBoard and PandaBoard ES. Complete hookup instructions are included, of course.

So what’s all this going to set you back? Tin Can Tools is selling the kit for $299, which is about $24 more than you’ll pay for the Pixel Qi display alone — assuming you’re able to find someone that has it for sale in the first place. They’re still a bit tricky to purchase online, and many of the company’s listed distribution partners show no inventory on hand or backorders with no ETA.

The LVDS adapter board sells for $29 and the Animal for $59, so this is a pretty solid deal if you’re looking to lighten your DIY workload a bit.

At the time of writing, Tin Can Tools only had four kits for sale. That means you’ll have to be fast if you want to get your hands on one and impress your friends with that fancy new hand-made gadget you’ve been pondering. Just make sure you save $500 for a 3D printer to add the requisite finishing touches.
